What type of massage is best for neck and back pain?

There are several types of massage that give relief from general muscle aches and pains.

The most common type of massage is Swedish massage

It's also known as massage therapy...or just massage.

People who have never had massage before usually start with Swedish massage.

The next step is deep tissue massage. Deep tissue massage is used for chronic tight or painful muscles, postural problems, and repetitive strain. This type of massage targets the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue.

There is often a bit of physical discomfort during the massage, as the massage therapist works on the deeper muscle layers. People usually feel a little sore for one to two days after the massage, but in a good kind of way...like the satisfying feeling after exercise.

Massage is meant to be a relaxing experience, so if you are experiencing increasing discomfort during the massage, don't just accept it, tell your massage therapist! All too often we see people who have been turned off massage by a bad experience. When it does happen, it is usually due to an inexperienced massage therapist. Never happens at Your Health Matters, of course!

Combining massage with chiropractic or osteopathic treatment

Many people find that they get a better result from combining massage and adjustment, especially if they are very stiff in the muscles and joints. Sometimes just a few minutes work on the tight muscles can make all the difference! A combination of massage and stretching techniques might be employed, it all depends on your level of comfort/discomfort. Brief massage before chiropractic or osteopathy is often done through clothing and is quite specific to the area being treated.

Patients with chronic neck and back pain who are "experienced" in treatment will often book a 30 to 90 minute massage immediately before their chiropractic or osteopathic visit. At Your Health Matters we do our utmost to accomodate the scheduling of consecutive appointments, we have five massage therapists, two chiropractors, one osteopath. If you make your appointment a few days in advance we will surely be able to help.
